Creating Contacts
Contacts provides a summary view of all contacts displaying the first name, last name, and default e-mail address. You may also define groups that appear in the Contacts list. Selecting a contact or group allows you to either compose a new message or view the respective details.

There are a number of ways to create a new entry in your contacts list:
- From an e-mail, click on the Add Contact button in the upper right portion of the message panel. This will automatically populate a new contact entry with the name and e-mail address of the sender of the message.
- vCard attachments can be dragged into Contacts.
- In the Contacts panel, click on the "+" button.
- Import Contacts via a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file.
When you create a new contact, a panel with several sections appears. Fill in the information you wish to save for the contact. Click on Save to save the information; click on Close to dismiss the screen.
To close without saving the information you've just entered, click on the Cancel button in the lower right of the panel.

Integration with E-Mail
You can drag contacts into two places in an e-mail compose window:
- To, CC and Bcc fields to address the e-mail. This will share the name and e-mail address of the contact.
- Attachment or body fields to attach as a vCard file. This will share all details for the contact.
Users that receive vCard files as e-mail attachments can drag them into Contacts to create a new contact. To address an e-mail, you can also:
- Click on the E-mail icon to add them to the To field. This icon will appear when you rollover a contact.
- Click on the arrow and select Compose an E-Mail to add them to the To field.
- Right-mouse click (CTRL-click on a Mac) a contact and select to add them to the To, CC, or Bcc fields. You can insert multiple contacts at a time – use Shift-click to select a range of contacts or CTRL-click (CMD-click on a Mac) to pick multiple contacts.

Importing Contacts
Optimum Online® E-mail supports importing Contacts via a comma separated value (CSV) file. You can import Contacts in two simple steps:

- Yahoo!
- Gmail
- MS Outlook
- MS Outlook Express
- Thunderbird
- Earthlink
- Import Contacts: Navigate to Contacts in Optimum Online E-mail and press the import contacts button located in the footer. A file selection window will pop up, with a *.csv filter. To import contacts from other sources, you can map your data into a supported CSV data structure for import. Download the sample CSV file to see an example of the expected data structure for your CSV file.

De-Duplicating Contacts
With Optimum Online E-mail you can easily find and manage your duplicate contacts. There are two ways to launch the contact de-duplication feature. You can either (a) select the "Find Duplicates" menu item in the Contacts dock menu, or (b) right-click from within the Contacts window.
When clicked, you will get a list of duplicate contacts, see figure (c). Contacts are considered duplicates when they have the same first and last names or if they have the same email address. Use "automerge", to allow the Contacts application to merge all of the duplicate sets, or review each duplicate set individually and manually choose the data to be merged.
automerge
- Use the "automerge" option to automatically merge duplicate contacts.
- Any conflicting data between the duplicate contacts will be placed in the "Notes" field of the merged contact. This ensures that no data will be lost after the automerge is complete.
review
- The "Review Duplicate Entries" panel displays the information for each contact in each duplicate set. See figure (d)
- Contacts will be merged only if the checkbox is selected. See figure (d-1). Un-checking the checkbox will leave the contact in your address book and not merge its data with the other contact information in the duplicate set.
- You can delete a contact from your address book by clicking the "X" icon. See figure (d-2).
- You can make changes to a contact before merging the entry by clicking the "edit" link. See figure (d-3).
- Click "Merge entries" to see a preview of the merged information. See figure (e) for the preview.
- You will repeat this manual merge process for each duplicate set.
- You will see a confirmation message indicating that you have completed the manual merge process for each duplicate set. See figure (f).
